The Scotland Election and the Communist Party: Conditions and Possibilities

Akash Chatterjee India//11:18pm, Apr 4th '21

As the country Scotland is heading towards the national elections in 2021, new possibilities are starting to emerge for the Communist Party of Britain. It seems that the party is going to have the largest election campaign since the 1980s. The country, Scotland, has suffered a major crisis like the Covid-19 pandemic and the incumbent Scottish National Party has failed to handle the situation properly. The weaker opposition forces have also not gained the momentum to encash the possibilities against the SNP government. Hence, the communist party in the upcoming election seems to become an electoral option for the common people in Scotland.

Keeping these things in mind, the party launched the election campaign on the 1st day of April. In the election manifesto, the communist party has emphasized the Covid-19 pandemic issue. The other local problems have also been highlighted in their electoral demands. As I've mentioned earlier, this seems to be the biggest electoral run for the party. Along with Scotland, the party seems to contest in the Wales Senedd, Greater London Authority and various English Council seats.

In its electoral manifesto, the party has promised to beat the Covid-19 pandemic issue. The leaders have opted for a push towards the zero covid strategies. In the recent past, the country has witnessed a housing crisis in an increasing manner. The communist party has highlighted the crisis in its manifesto and suggested possible solutions to the crisis. The discrimination between the rich and poor seems to be increasing too. The questions of land and land reforms are also essential in this election. Hence the communist party has demanded land reform policies. Keeping the border issue in mind, devolution of powers in the north of the border has also been prescribed. The main goal of the communist party in this election is to emphasize the rich vs poor distinction in the country. The discrimination has been increasing and the party wants to tackle the situation at any cost.

The questions of class and class struggle are also important for the party. Mathew Waddel, one of the prime faces of the party in this election, said that the SNP government only serves the Capitalists. Instead of serving the mass development campaign the government always picks the wealthy and riches first. Hence a politics of class discrimination always follows the country. Capitalists influence the policies of the SNP government. Waddell is contesting from the Lothians region in this election. The electoral tussle in this seat will become interesting this time. Like Waddel, Johnny Hunter is expected to deliver an interesting fight from the Glasgow seat. Eyes are on Daniel Lambe too, as he is going to contest from two seats, Motherwell and Wishaw constituencies, Robin Talbot (one of the associate editor of "The International") is also expected to put up a good fight from the seat of London Assembly.

The politics in Britain seems to be taking a good shift since the 2019 election in the United Kingdom. The masks of the capitalists have been torn. People have witnessed the failure of neo-liberal practices and policies. The Labour party, on the other hand, is facing some critical issues from the inside party structure. In this present scenario, the communist party is becoming an inevitable option for the poor in the country. Now the time has come to witness whether the communist party can utilise the conditions fully.
